There are brief respites from worry

These are called panic... or Tumblr.
Hi, I'm Issie welcome to my latest obsession. she/they/goblin. Fair warning - this blog will follow my current hyperfixation so be prepared to get spammed with all sorts of nonsense. We can definitely be friends if you like DnD, board games, winter air, laughing so hard your sides hurt, paperclips, the crunch of dry leaves and gravel, and being unabashedly enthusiastic about things. (Which right now is RQG)

The long wavelengths of the light spectrum—red, yellow, and orange—can penetrate to approximately 15, 30, and 50 meters (49, 98, and 164 feet), respectively, while the short wavelengths of the light spectrum—violet, blue and green—can penetrate further, to the lower limits of the euphotic zone. Blue penetrates the deepest, which is why deep, clear ocean water and some tropical water appear to be blue most of the time. Moreover, clearer waters have fewer particles to affect the transmission of light, and scattering by the water itself controls color. Water in shallow coastal areas tends to contain a greater amount of particles that scatter or absorb light wavelengths differently, which is why sea water close to shore may appear more green or brown in color.

Fun fact! This is why there are some sea creatures in the twilight zone in the ocean who use red pigment to camoflauge. Red light doesn’t reach down that far, so there isn’t any light to reflect and the animals appear black.

Okay, you need to make sure you play this game at some point. Maybe not today or anything, because you’ll need about thirty minutes and a serious willingness to understand how it works, but - it’s so worth it. It’s basically an answer to our occasional frustration - why do assholes always come out on top? - and the beautiful thing about it is that not only does it explain how that happens, but also how we can change it.

    image

“In the short run, the game defines the players. But in the long run, it’s us players who define the game.”

This is fascinating if you’re into math or sociology or computer programming or all of the above.

Everyone, everywhere, without exception, should play this thing through.

Don’t check just this - check out all of Nicky Case’s work. They’re a brilliant creator and I heavily recommend checking out at least one of their projects.  Their website can be found here.

Parable of the Polygons - an interactive experiment that shows how tiny individual biases can collectively cause segregation on a massive scale.

To Build a Better Ballot - an interactive experiment that shows the alternatives to the voting systems we currently use and how they can be more representative and democratic, along with their faults.

Coming Out Simulator - a short interactive story/novel about coming out, based off of Case’s own experiences. Not one I’ve played myself but still one I can recommend.

Loopy - a very simple but useful tool to show how systems interact with each other and how things can self-propagate.

We Become What We Behold - “ a game about news cycles, vicious cycles, infinite cycles.“ A short five-minute game about news and media. Warnings for violence, blood, death and stress.

OH MY GOD THIS IS FRICKING AMAIZNG WOW WOW WOW WOW YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS YES INTELLECT

I don’t know how long I’ve been here. Time seems to pass differently. But the place is cozy and private so I have no complaints. And whenever I’m hungry, I go outside with my bowl and walk down the hill to the shore. Sometimes the lake is made of soup. Sometimes it’s huge pasta noodles the size of barges. Sometimes it’s breakfast cereal. Sometimes it’s dumplings the size of great whales. I dip my little bowl and take a portion and carry it back up to the house.

Today I found a new bowl! In its center is a little hill with a little house. I will carry it down to the shore and fill it up, and whomever lives in that little house can have a tiny portion of my meal. I hope they have a nice bowl to put it in..

Group of friends who are close because they all have the same superpower except no they don’t.

As in, they all think the other ones have the same superpower as them, but, in fact, they do not.

    For example:

Time traveler who always is running into these other people who seem to know what’s going on or what will happen and is so happy he can finally share his travel stories.

Precognitive who is relieved he isn’t the only one with the gift and who is glad to get help averting future disasters.

Mind reader with a horrible memory who tries to stay on top of things by skimming surface thoughts. You want to talk about next week’s election results and how they changed the next decade? She’s with you.

Totally normal guy who thinks the others have the absolute best bit ever and loves playing along.

They save the world at least twice without a single clue shared between the four of them.

I think one of my favorite things in the world is to tell people about the penis plot point in isaac asimov’s caves of steel. Like. It sounds so fake, its so funny

For those uninitiated, the penis plot point is when in Isaac Asimov’s robot mystery novel, Caves of Steel, the human detective character is unbelieving that his android partner is really a robot, and the most concrete evidence he gets for this theory is that he fucking looked at his android partner’s dick, and went ‘theres no way a robot could have a dick that good’ and doubled down on it and made his own red herring

And when he presented his theory, the android’s creators were like “WHY WERE YOU LOOKING AT HIS DICK IN SO MUCH DETAIL HUH???” And the detective guy FAINTS.

    Thank you Isaac Asimov
